Can Killer Bee Swarms Survive High-Powered Sound Waves?

August 30th, 2008

Can we stop killer bee swarms or even locust plagues using high-powered sound waves? Some believe it is possible and others say we can steer them using sound waves too. In an online think tank this subject came up and think tank member Warren states;

“I would be astounded to see a bee survive flight through all of that sound energy. I suspect swarms have frequency related dynamics that can be modified as you suggest for some other advantage, or destroyed as I suggest, to completely destroy their ability to continue organized flight.”

Yes, I would believe this to be so. Although if the bees could survive, thru modulation of their frequency that would not surprise me; although I would like to see how they do it, if they are able too.

Warren states; “For me, at this moment in time; I’d just like to see our species gain the ability to exact some measure of control over one more unknown, therefore intimidating phenomena; swarms, whether bees or others. If their ability to fly is disrupted with a sound weapon then when a bee swarm is found, call 911 and the fire department comes out, opens up the side of a van and targets the swarm.”

Well the doom and gloomers predict the Earth heating up and as it does the dynamics of the food chain will change and the insects as you say are more adapted to us to survive and will indeed be rulers of the surface of said planet well after humans are extinct. If such an unfortunate set of events; ‘global warming’ climate cliff occurs and a rapid increase in temperature occurs [15 degrees F average] then there will be hell to pay with over populated human populations, water supplies and weather. Such things could cause more swarming as insects move to greener pastures. They will want their species to survive and use survival group efforts [swarming] to do that.

In the case of Bees, they provide pollination and help crop yields, if we take out the bee populations due to being afraid of swarms, then we do a disservice to feeding the world of humans. Although Locust Swarms have been touted as plagues and religiously made evil, they are merely fulfilling their niche and do not come that often. Perhaps using the sound to build barriers in areas of dense human populations might be an idea or use the sound to steer them away makes sense. Knocking out an entire swarm of Bees and killing the Queen Bee, means we create a problem for ourselves as those colonies will not divide later to increase the bee populations which are currently dwindling due to a pathogen in the larva. And this is very bad for crop yields. Also we have crop yield issues with the butterflies, which also help pollinate things.

I am not opposed to the idea of finding out the answer to the question, but would warn against a bunch of yahoo first responders and fearing citizens calling in natural bee colonies, which are our friends and help us survive and feed human populations.

If on the other hand some nut case Bio-scientist makes a superior Bee swarm or Bees adapt and evolve in our lifetime to attack humans or any swarming insect for that matter then well that is a different story really. Sounds more like the makings of a Sci Fi novel really like the book “Prey”. But if so I agree that such a device could be mounted in a helicopter for rapid deployment and delivery. Perhaps we might consider all this in 2006.

What Your Competition Knows About Traffic

August 28th, 2008

Need more traffic? There’s a lot you can learn from spying on your competition. Your competition has traffic sources that you can easily swipe by following these steps.

Step One: Who should you spy on? You probably can name six to thirty online competitors. If not, you need to go through Google and Yahoo with the key terms you target. Who comes up? Write down everyone who has a business similar to yours, even if they aren’t identical.

Now you need to figure out who you should spy on first. Begin with the most successful websites. How do you find them? It’s easy with a couple tools.

The Google toolbar (toolbar.google.com) is essential for spying. The Google toolbar features a little bar labeled “PageRank.” Depending on each site, this bar may be gray, white, or (usually) a combination of green and white. The more green, the higher Google ranks that page. To get an exact PageRank, put your cursor over the PageRank graph and hold it there. Your competitors with the highest PageRank are the ones you want to look at very closely.

You also want to spy on the competitors with the most traffic. To figure out the relative traffic position of your competition (compared to all web sites), go to alexa.com and download their toolbar. The Alexa toolbar will display a number for each website it?s traffic rank. The lower the number, the higher the traffic. (For example, Yahoo?s Alexa rank is 1, while Blockbuster?s is 2,220.)

Step two: Snoop through your competitor’s log files to see which sites and search terms send them the most traffic. Is there a public stats tracker on your competitor’s site? If so, check it out. If not, try typing in your competitor’s URL with /stats.html and /stats/ on the end of it. Often times, web hosts put statistics here - without password protection. Still can’t find your competitor’s stats? Try Googling their URL and “statistics.” It’s a long shot, but sometimes statistics pages will turn up this way.

Step three: Look at who is linking to your competitor. The easiest way to do this is to run a backward link search in Google and Altavista. Simply type in link:http://www.yourcompetition.com (using your competitor’s URL). You’ll find most of the pages that link to your competitor this way. How do you know which links are the best? By using the Google toolbar. The pages linking to your competitor with the highest PageRank are the ones you should look to for links of your own.

To steal those links, email all the webmasters that are linking to your competitor without getting a link back in return. Figure out why they link to your competitor (good free content, subject fits site, etc), and give them a better reason to link to you. Chances are, most of these webmasters will give you a link as well.

Once you have these new sites linking to yours, positive changes in your Google ranking are likely. You may even overtake your competitor for your targeted search terms especially if you get links from spying on multiple sites. All from a little reconnaissance work and some emailing!

The Thinking behind Today’s Astonishing LCD TV’s

August 28th, 2008

When Panasonic formerly began building a brand new flagship collection of tellies roughly around the year 2000, their goal was: Catch Sound and Vision’s reductions on Sony 26 inches LCD TVs!

(+) To supply film quality so truly, television spectators would consider that they are not merely watching but actually taking part in the action at first hand.

(+) To support the belief of “actually being there” by immersing the television viewers in top-notch sound.

(+) To develop the spectators experience by creating a shiny, fashionable, yet totally unobtrusive TV that will not divert the spectator from what’s going on on-screen.

(+) To make using the TV as uncomplicated as possible while also taking full advantage of its networking facilities.

(+) To mirror this ambition, the newest television range was approved to be advertised as VIERA: signifying a new VIsion ERA. The conclusion became the best selling and prize-winning VIERA collection of Plasma & LCD televisions that we have these days, awarding you the subsequent enhancements:

Picture performance: Equipped with Panasonic’s personally developed V.Real II / V.Real Pro II equipment - the outcome of months & months of painstaking study & advancement covering the breadth of the television chain from specialised television cameras all the through to TV’s in your dinning rooms - each & every VIERA supplies images of outstanding reality & beauty and puts you solidly at the central part of the live action.

Unequalled audio: Featuring up-to-date digital tuners & various super-slim unassuming loudspeakers all stored in the sleek and slender frame of the VIERA itself, V.Audio sound absorbs you in the on-screen action.

Glossy yet inconspicuous style: From the television to the TV stand, VIERA has neat fluid lines that are practically organic in look. This inventive styling has been the hallmark of VIERA televisions since the begin & gives the notion of more or less a “floating” screen - which doesn’t sidetrack you from the on-screen action. Additionally, VIERA TV’s have been planed from the ground up with the environmental situation cautiously in mind & feature refillable bamboo loudspeakers, lead free building, and best practice manufacturing.

Holidays: 4 Gifts of More Lasting Value for You

August 25th, 2008

The Gift of a Wish

What one wish, that you could have influence over, would you wish for this holiday season?

While we can wish for all kind of things, choose one that you have control or influence over coming true.

Richard Bach, the author of “Illusions” has said:

“You are never given a wish without the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it however.”

What one wish could you commit to working toward this holiday season?

The Gift of Rest

While you are working hard on making your wish a reality, remember to rest.

Rest, when used in the correct way, does not slow you down. Rest gives your more energy to do the things you want to do.

It’s good to occasionally pull out your mats and take a nap.

The Gift of Movement

This sounds so simple, yet it is so ignored:

We are designed to move.

And yet the modern lifestyle involves so little real movement. Get up in the morning and go to work. Come home, eat dinner, watch TV, go to bed, get up and do it again.

Design movement into your day.

The Gift of High Expectations

I see so many people set very low goals and then fail to live up to them.

The gift of higher expectations for yourself holds you accountable to be the best version of you that you can be.

7 Destructive Habits of Incompetent People

August 25th, 2008

WARNING! If you want to have a fantastic life, never engage
yourself in these 7 deadly habits that incompetent people do.

NUMBER 1 - They Think, Say, & Do Negative Things.

Yup. They see problems in every opportunity.

They complain that the sun is too hot. They cursed the rain
for ruining their plans for the day. They blame the wind
for ruining their hair.

They think that everyone is against them. They see the problems
but never the solutions.

Every little bit of difficulty is exaggerated to the point of
tragedy. They regard failures as catastrophes. They become
discouraged easily instead of learning from their mistakes.

They never seem to move forward because they’re always afraid
to come out of their comfort zones.

NUMBER 2 - They Act Before They Think.

They move based on instinst or impulse. If they see something
they like, they buy at once without any second thought.

Then they see something better. They regret & curse for not
able to take advantage of the bargain.

Then they spend & spend again until nothing’s left. They
don’t think about the future. What they’re after is the
pleasure they will experience at present.

They don’t think about the consequenses. Those who engage
in unsafe sex, criminality, and the like are included in
this group.

NUMBER 3 - They Talk Much More Than They Listen

They want to be the star of the show. So they always engage
in talks that would make them heroes, even to the point of
lying.

Oftentimes they are not aware that what they’re saying is not
sensible anymore.

When other people advise them, they close their ears because
they’re too proud to admit their mistakes.

In their mind they’re always correct. They reject suggestions
because that will make them feel inferior.

NUMBER 4 - They Give Up Easily

Successful people treat failures as stepping stones to success.

Incompetent ones call it quits upon recognizing the first signs
of failure.

At first, they may be excited to start an endeavor. But then
they lose interest fairly quickly, especially when they
encounter errors.

Then they go & search for a new one. Same story & same results.
Incompetent people don’t have the persistence to go on and
fulfill their dreams.

NUMBER 5 - They Try to Bring Others Down To Their Level

Incompetent people envy other successful individuals. Instead
of working hard to be like them, these incompetent ones spread
rumors and try every dirty trick to bring them down.

They could’ve asked these successful ones nicely. But no, they’re
too proud. They don’t want to ask advise. Moreover, they’re
too negative to accomplish anything.

NUMBER 6 - They Waste Their Time

They don’t know what to do next. They may just be contented on
eating, getting drunk, watching TV, or worse, staring at the
blank wall with no thoughts whatsoever to improve their lives.

It’s perfectly fine to enjoy once in a while. But time should be
managed efficiently in order to succeed. There should be a
proper balance between work & pleasure.

NUMBER 7 - They Take the Easy Way Out

If there are two roads to choose from, incompetent people would
choose the wider road with less rewards than the narrower road
with much better rewards at the end.

They don’t want any suffering or hardship. They want a good life.

What these people don’t know is that what you reap is what you
sow. Efforts & action will not go unnoticed.

If only they would be willing to sacrifice a little, they would
be much better off.

Successful people made it through trials & error. They never
give up. They are willing to do everything necessary to achieve
what they aspire for in life.

Google: Products and By Products

August 17th, 2008

These days Google is much more than a search engine, and although their search engine is by far their most important product, more and more Google is coming out with by products which are generating a lot of interest. During the course of this article I am going to cover a number of these by products in more detail.

Google Earth

Google Earth is a free to use program that allows users to explore a virtual world with incredible detail. Google Earth streams satellite images over this virtual Earth and allows users to zoom in on any part of the world. All of the major cities are covered in detail and it is possible to zoom right in on a place of interest.

Gmail

Gmail is Google’s answer to hotmail, Yahoo mail or any other web based email program. Rather than being your run of the mill web based email service, Gmail offers a number of unique options such as searching emails instead of sorting them, huge amount of storage space and a top notch Spam filter. If you don’t already have a gmail account, get one.

Google Calendar

Google Calendar is Google’s newest product, and while it may seem to be a strange one, there is no doubt that Google has revolutionised calendars. You can import your Outlook calendar into Google Calendar, Google Calendar has many more features. Among the best feature in my opinion, is the ability to share calendars with friends and family and allow them editing privileges. You can now keep in touch with friends and family from your Gmail account.

Among the other excellent offerings from the Google Plex is the Google Toolbar, Gtalk which works excellently with Gmail and Google Desktop which allows you to search your computer while giving you relevant information such as the weather conditions in your location.

Mass Market Gaming Notebooks Here

August 17th, 2008

Gaming notebooks were once only for those who had cash and not for the mainstream consumer. In the past the small number of sales countered by the profit margins. They were the laptops you dreamed of but were out of your reach. They were pretty much desktop rivals and the quickest, best laptop you could buy. Having said that the vast number of us most likely didn’t buy laptops of this kind because of the price. In the present things are really contrasting with international manufacturers also launching gaming portables.

These notebook computers have a particular price bracket and these brands are aware they do not have to be price competitive in this case. Margins have been so narrow recently that this is a great chance to make more cash by retailing hardware. Local retailers cannot compete with them in convincing us to buy laptops. I have no clue what this will do to smaller companies but it will have a detrimental effect on them. This formerly exclusive technology is simply going to be targeted at everyone now. In my point of view if anybodies prepared to part with a lot of cash the established brand always comes out victorious.

To my surprise the mass produced gaming laptops are as good if not better than the best laptops available to buy. I predict that littler system builders could still have a chance. I can predict the service of being able to configure the laptop to be an important purchasing factor. Consumers that purchase high spec laptop computers can normally look past the frills. More often than not the specifications matter when compared to the styling for these sort of people.

All the changes are really beneficial from the customers standpoint. Ultimately it will drive prices down even more and make the premium technology even more affordable for all of us. Who can possibly envisage what will occur. I’m in fact not sure anymore. New technology releases should maintain high prices. Greater competition usually gives improved technology at lower prices so the future should be promising.

In my opinion this place http://www.rizeon.com/gaming_laptops/page.php are offering laptops for gaming at good prices.

How a Three Letter Word Kills Good Relationships

August 17th, 2008

“You know, I really do love fish!”

My friend Steve came up with this profound comment as we
were about to tuck into the gastronomic offerings before us
in a crowded downtown restaurant. I raised my eyebrows.

Well, on the face of it, Steve sure wasn’t kidding. He lost
no time in matching words with action as he attacked the
luscious fried sole with cream sauce with unbelievable
gusto.

But I know my friend is a philosopher at heart, and I wasn’t
going to let him get away with it so easily.

“Steve,” I said. “You’re doing a great job with
that fish. I
envy your efficiency. But…”

“But what?”

“What do you mean that you LOVE it?”

“I sure do,” Steve assured me. “Could eat it
for breakfast
lunch and supper. I believe I could almost live on it.”

“Yeah,” I retorted. “And for the sake of your
unquenchable
love, the lives of how many fish are sniffed out every day?
Steve, you don’t love FISH. You love YOURSELF.”

And my friend was forced to admit I was right.

Now, let’s switch focus a bit. Let’s talk a little about
Pete, another good friend of mine.

(OK, OK, I’ll come clean. In real life, I don’t have a
friend called Steve nor one called Pete. If I did, I
wouldn’t be gossiping about them like this, would I? I hate
gossip. Fortunately, though, I’ve a reasonably good
imagination, and I’m trying to put across some pretty
important concepts here…

Forgive me? Good…)

Couple who are always squabbling

Pete has been married for ten years or more, and he and his
good wife, Jane are almost always squabbling.

To tell the truth, I’ve never known anything like it. It’s
either he insulting her, or she insulting him. In private or
public, it seems to make little difference; each trying to
find a juicier epithet still to hurl at the other.

And yet…

Ever since I’ve known him, Pete has been protesting that he
loves Jane dearly. And you know something? He does. I should
know. He’s MY friend.

True, at one time, I was skeptical. If Pete said he loved
his wife, I could hardly doubt it, but I thought it was like
Steve and his beloved fish. Now I know better.

Good - so how do I know? Alright, I’ll tell you.

A few years ago, something of a medical nature was
apparently bothering Jane a bit, so off she went to her
doctor for a check-up. She wasn’t expecting anything
particularly dramatic, but what she heard from the physician
that day was a bombshell, to put it very mildly.

“Jane, I don’t like to frighten you, but this is life
threatening. Very , very serious. However, time is still on
our side. The next two months will be critical. You must
follow the treatment program to the letter, and get plenty
of rest. And keep praying…”

Do you think there was any bickering in Steve and Jane’s
household during the following two months? Not on your life!

Blissful feeling of intimacy

Pete’s single-minded concern for his wife’s health and
comfort, if predictable, was complete. And if a pain wracked
Jane did allow an occasional hurtful remark to pass her
lips, he found it pretty easy to ignore it.

Ironically, this was, in some ways, the happiest period of
the marriage. A blissful feeling of intimacy, such as
neither partner had ever dreamed possible, enveloped the
unsuspecting couple. Pete’s obsession with Jane’s welfare
left him with no time for extraneous thoughts, and Jane’s
appreciation and admiration grew stronger day by day.

Two month’s later, they were back at the doctor’s. Can you
imagine the overwhelming relief when he pronounced: “The
danger’s over!”?

Business as usual…

And the next day - business as usual! Petty bickering,
name-calling, all kinds of verbal barbs and arrows. Well, if
that brings them a little contentment in life…everyone to
their own taste!

But seriously, what makes them do it? Can they really be
contented that way? More pointedly, how could a couple that
had reached such great heights slip back overnight?

It all boils down to a critical three-letter word.

We call it the EGO.

Is the Ego really so bad? Not always. If by “ego” we
mean
“self-esteem”, it’s indispensable. Many people say that
we
can’t start to love others until we love ourselves first.
That’s perfectly true - IF we’re talking about the right
kind of self-love.

But if my Ego means my needs, my honor, my sensitivities,
always come first (and probably middle and last), boy,
we’re playing with dynamite!

Sure, Pete loves Jane, and Jane loves Pete. Always did,
always will. If one would disappear from the other’s life,
he or she would know all about it!

So what’s the problem?

Then what’s the problem? Why does it take a medical crisis
to create a little bit of peace and harmony in their home?
What prevents this at other times?

And what about US? What blocks the harmony that we seek in
our homes, the peaceful cooperation we want in our
workplaces?

The Ego that insists that I’m right, that will not yield on
the most trivial issue. The Ego that demands the honor
that’s due to me. The Ego that pursues justice at all costs,
irrespective of everything it knocks down on the way!

And for the sake of that pompous ass of an Ego, we’re
prepared to sacrifice everything!
