Alexander Technique - Better Posture, Better Health, Better Life

March 30th, 2009

Alexander Technique In brief

A self-help therapy in which people are taught postural and physical skills to improve usage of their own body and eliminate unnecessary stress and tension.

Background and History

The creator of this technique, Frederick Matthias Alexander, was an Australian who lived in the late 1800s. A promising actor, he had problems with his voice that began to impact on his career. Doctors could find nothing wrong so Alexander began to wonder if he was somehow putting undue stress and strain on his vocal organs. He began to observe himself and others to try to understand the mechanisms that influenced speech.

Over many years his observations lead him to conclude that speech was influenced by the entire posture and the balance of tension in the whole body. He further observed that these factors influenced not only speech but the ability to maintain tranquil under pressure, breathing, correct use of the limbs, and overall health. He concluded that in fact these things were crucial for correct and healthy functioning of the body. As his voice and general health improved he gradually began to show others his technique and eventually set up a practice.

By 1904 he was very successful and moved to London, England to continue his work.
Alexander proved popular in London, his client list including such eminent names as George Bernard Shaw, Aldous Huxley and William Temple, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Furthermore, his method was endorsed by many leading scientists who agreed that it was consistent with modern scientific discoveries in neurology and physiology. Sir Charles Sherrington, the ‘father of neurology’ was one such scientist who back Alexander’s method. In 1931 Alexander began to train teachers of the technique. He ran 3 year training courses, which he continued until his death at the age of 86.

Alexander Technique today

There are an estimated 2500 teachers of Alexander technique around the world today, with the highest concentration in the UK. It is well known among performing artists and indeed is part of the curriculum at many schools of performing arts.

How does it work?

Alexander Technique teaches self-awareness so that the underlying causes of pain and discomfort can be identified and remedied. By using the body more efficiently less stress and strain is put on the joints, muscles and ligaments.

Despite the backing from the conventional medical establishment since the beginning, there has been little formal research in the Technique. Small pilot studies have shown improvements in balance, depression associated with Parkinsons disease, and ease of breathing, among other things.

High School Band Early Morning Practice

March 29th, 2009

Anyone who has ever been involved in an award winning High School Band knows that it takes hours of practice to make the grade. This means High School Bands must get up early to get it done. Many times as daylight savings time sets in they are practicing before sunrise, in the dark. But with school budgets strapped they may find that the School District will not turn on the stadium lights for them to practice to become perfect. Without perfection they cannot win. Additionally High School traveling and competing bands have huge budgets in excess of $65,000 per year.

http://www.carwashguys.com/fundraisers/LAschools.html

Travel costs have gone up too and there is only so much the High School Bands can earn doing fundraisers to pay for these costs yet still have time to practice. School Buses use diesel fuel and those costs are now in excess of $3.15 per gallon. The kids cannot adequately absorb these costs and it is really not safe to be doing all this stuff in the dark.

I propose that we use beat of the drums and sounds of the band along with alternative energy too power up the lights for the kids using the vibrational energy of the machinery and refinery itself. How so you ask? By placing large 4′ X 8′ sandwich sheets with a taunt film on the vibrational side and small copper lined tubes; hundreds of these tubes running perpendicular to the sheets, with magnets inside bouncing back and forth. These magnets will charge a capacitor and be hooked up to an LED lighting system using fiber optics or reflectors, each one hooked up to a .2 to .5 watt light. With hundreds of thousands of lights hooked up in a composite format it will light up the lights needed for these early morning or after school night time practices without the light pollution associated with streetlights, stadium lights or in large cities.

Currently this technology is being used in those little flashlights you see advertised on television that you shake and they light, but you never need batteries. This idea of lighting up the early morning practice is using that technology on a larger scale with miniaturized parts making up the guts between the sandwich sheets. Let there be light, thru vibrational energy and there was. Think on it.

UK Hypnotherapists - How to Choose a Hypnotherapist (Part 1)

March 29th, 2009

Okay, so you have decided that hypnotherapy is the type of help you would like to receive in order to overcome your issue. Now all you need to do is decide which hypnotherapist to see.

This may be where confusion starts to rain, as there are different titles for hypnotherapists such as Curative Hypnotherapists, Clinical Hypnotherapists, Hypnoanalysts, Suggestion Hypnotherapists and Psycho-hypnotherapists and probably a few others as well.

So even though you have made a decision to see a hypnotherapist it may seem that the title a hypnotherapist uses won’t help you decide which type of hypnotherapist is right for you.

Well although the range of titles may confuse, there is a way of keeping your choices simple.

Some hypnotherapists use purely positive suggestions to help you overcome your issue. For many people this can be an effective way of resolving their issue. In fact all hypnotherapists will use positive suggestions as a matter of course. It is just that some hypnotherapists use this approach only and may use the title Suggestion Hypnotherapist or just ‘hypnotherapist’ but will describe their approach as being mainly that of positive suggestions to the subconscious mind.

All of the other types of hypnotherapist will use positive suggestions but they will also use other means of resolving your issue. The other means of resolving issues are many and varied but basically it will involve processes to identify the possible causes of the issue and then resolve the cause’s current influence on you.

The psycho-hypnotherapist will have more psychotherapy type processes and approaches to dealing with issues and use these whilst you are in a hypnotic state.

The hypnoanalyst will as the name suggests, provide the opportunity to go through analysis whilst in the hypnotic state and include other aspects of your life and experiences that may have some bearing on the presenting issue.

Suggestion hypnotherapy is usually for small number of sessions e.g. 2 to 3. With hypnoanalysis this may last for anything from 6 sessions and upwards.

All types of UK hypnotherapists and their approaches have common ground and all can be highly effective.

Guitar lesson: Learn To Read Sheet Music

March 28th, 2009

A guitar is a fantastic instrument to play. It is easy to play and very difficult depending on what you play. Let’s take a look at learning to play guitar sheet music!

I have found in my teaching experiences that many pupils find reading sheet music on guitar to be very difficult.

Admittedly there are a lot of factors that make reading guitar sheet music notation more of a challenge than on other instruments in certain aspects.

However, the most important factor is in my opinion that many guitarists never decide to learn to find the notes on the guitar. Instead they cultivate the habit of listening, playing and calculating where the specific note probably is to be played on the guitar.

Such a strategy is too slow to make it possible to sight read sheet music on guitar. A wish and then a decision to really start learning the notes on the guitar is much better than to use the before mentioned method to find the notes.

You have to start from where you are if you want to progress and become a good sight reader on guitar.

In my teaching experiences I have found that many people that play guitar wants to be somewhere else than where they ought to be.

The problem with playing too difficult guitar pieces is that it’s difficult to develop note reading skills, learning to sight read and of course to learn the guitar pieces properly.

We will start this little tutorial on reading guitar sheet music by finding a few notes on the guitar fretboard.

You will find the note E on the first open string if your guitar is tuned with the most conventional tuning. This note can also be found on the second string and the fifth fret.

E on the third string is on the ninth fret. I would suggest that you practice playing the note E in these positions back and forth until you can find the note E without effort.

You will also find the note E in a lower octave on the fourth string and the second fret. On the fifth string you will find the same note on the seventh fret.

The sixth string is an E one octave lower. Let’s invent an exercise to help you find the E notes on the guitar fretboard:

The task is to play the strings on the guitar in this order:

6 5 4 3 2 1 2 3 4 5 6

As you play the strings the notes you play shall be the note E. This means that the sixth string and the first string are open strings and on the other strings you have to find the right fret.

Try to play slowly in an even tempo until you don’t have to think about where to place you fingers. When you find this easy to do you can proceed by choosing another note, for example G and use the same method.

Knowing the notes on the guitar fingerboard is important in many ways.

To find your way around on your guitar will be a great help for you, not only when you play guitar sheet music but also when you are playing by ear or try to figure out the name of a chord or are playing by ear!

First Guitar Lesson - Taking Care of Your Instrument

March 27th, 2009

Taking care of your instrument is not only the first guitar lesson - it should become a regular habit for beginners and experts alike. Apart from ensuring longer life and consistent sound quality, by this practice you also grow a sense of respect for your guitar, an affinity and a bond with the instrument. You come to “know” your guitar better. On the other hand if you tend to neglect your guitar eventually its quality of sound will suffer. The sound quality is as important as the skill of the player.

You may like to consider using a hard shell case for transporting your guitar. The hard case holds the guitar cushioned securely in place so that the instrument does not get bumps and jerks in handling. This not only protects the body of the guitar, it also keeps the guitar tuned for a longer time.

Many people use soft or cloth “gig bag” which can be zipped up. Although such bags protect the instrument from dust, they do not provide mechanical strength to protect the guitar from possible physical damage. These bags do not even protect the tuning nuts which turn during handling and the guitar gets out of tune. To avoid such problems hard shell case of proper size should be used. The hard cases are designed to take the impact while holding the guitar safely, protecting body and neck of the guitar and keeping it in tune.

Another important accessory is a guitar stand. When you are not playing the guitar you should keep it on a guitar stand. It is not a good practice to lean the guitar against the wall. This can warp the neck of the guitar in due course. The warping will increase the distance between the strings and the fingerboard. This will in turn not only affect the quality of sound, you will need to apply more force to play the instrument. Your level of performance will be affected. To avoid such problems the guitar should be placed on a stand or a level surface. It is good idea to cover the guitar when not using it. You can keep the guitar in its hard shell case when not playing it.

The strings exert considerable force on the guitar. There is enough strength designed in the guitar to withstand this force without deforming. However, if strings are tightened too much, it will give additional strain on the guitar. To prevent over-tightening and also for ease of tuning you can have a tuning device for your guitar. With the help of this device you will be able to tune the guitar quickly and accurately.

If you are very serious about protecting your guitar, you should actually tune down your guitar (loosen the strings) when you are not playing it. You can again tune-in when you decide to play next time. I know it will be a botheration to tune the guitar so many times, but it will provide greater protection.

There are some common sense practices. You need to keep your guitar clean. While you clean your instrument, you can also develop a habit of inspecting the body of your guitar and take action quickly. For example, if any of the strings start rusting they should be replaced.

The movement of the tuning nuts should be smooth. At the earliest signs of any jerky movements, the nuts should be set right by proper maintenance.

Care and maintenance of your instrument is an important guitar lesson which should be religiously followed. The better you take care of your guitar, the better output you can expect.

Scuba Diving Equipment for Safe Scuba Diving

March 23rd, 2009

Enhance your dive experience and keep yourself safe, with quality scuba diving equipment. While choosing the equipments for scuba diving, one must have a good knowledge about the quality of equipments from various available brands. It would be wiser to purchase scuba equipment brands with a known and factual history of performance rather than to try saving money as your own life might depend on it.

Basically the same since Jacques Cousteau introduced the Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus to the world, diving equipment has improved, although diving equipment has remained. In SCUBA diving, O2 enriched gas mixes are often used in order to help flush out nitrogen from the body more rapidly, and divers also encounter raised atmospheric pressure.

Leading makers of scuba diving equipment are continually enhancing products for safety, comfort, and reliability. There are a few things you will need to begin scuba diving including a mask and fins. One of the biggest advances for the recreational diver is the dive computer. Enabling divers to precisely monitor their downtime, trajectory performance, safety, the Dive computer has revolutionized the precision with which diver’s plan their dives.

Care should be taken regarding the quality of equipment, however just as important is the comfort and functionality,as noted above. The size of the tank in scuba diving often varies.

Massage Therapy: Beyond Touch

March 19th, 2009

Massage therapy is a type of therapy that incorporates the use of massage in helping to heal the body in one form or another. In many cases, the simply applying of pressure to certain areas of the body will relive aching muscles and help the individual to relax. It can help to minimize stress as well as to improve overall health of many areas of the body. This type of therapy is one that is enjoyable and can be a treat for a person or part of their normal exercise regime.

In massage, there are several areas of the body that are targeted including the muscles, the joints, the tendons, the ligaments, and connective tissues. By applying massage techniques to these various parts of the body, a therapist can help to heal injuries, help to minimize pain and manage pain and it an help to relieve stress that is often psychologically displayed. Creating Online Communities

March 15th, 2009

Looking for somewhere online to meet new people, discuss hobbies, plan events, or just have fun chatting? Online forums have been around for some time on the internet and often free and easy to setup. Forums are basically online discussion web sites where people share information and chat grouped around a set of topics. One example might be a local photography club. You could setup topics around types of cameras, locations for shooting, local events and meetings, printing tips, etc. Often there are administrators and moderators that help to keep the discussion orderly and on topic.

Some items to consider when starting an online forum include…

Cost - Often you can find them for free. There will probably be some advertising on the site, but don’t most sites now a days?

Features - Does the forum support avatars, private messages, user levels, themes, etc.

Security - Is it possible to create forums that only register users can post in? Helps to avoid those spammers.

I cannot stress the last one enough. You should be completely able to control who is in your forums. One bad apple spoils the bunch. On that same note, it is common for a forums to have moderators. These are people that help enforce the rules in the forum. Make sure your choose your help wisely. When it comes to administrators, there should only ever be one. Administrators have the keys to the city and can set your forum ablaze.

Finally to make a forum a success you need to attract people to it to join. Obviously if it is for a church or some other established group, this is relatively easy. Tell your friends, family, club members. If you are starting from scratch, do the same. Tell people, show people, invite people. Check to see if your forum site is listed in search engines like google. Once you get past that initial setup and recruitment your will soon be on your way to having a forum that you and your friends can enjoy.
