Top Six Decorating Mistakes You Should Avoid

February 8th, 2010

Although mistakes are good catalysts of improvements, they do not have to be part of your home decorating strategy. The following are the top six mistakes that people commit. Knowing them will help you come up with effective home renovation ideas.

a. Accessory overload. One of the problems that people have is because of a misconception that when decorating their house, they should fill every inch of space that they have. The opposite is actually recommended. Make sure that you leave some breathing space in your room. Too much accessories, no matter how wonderful or expensive they are, would only make the room look cluttered. Too many accessories are also very impractical since it would become difficult to move around with little space left.

b. Throw pillows may be cute but can also be annoying. It is not very inviting and comfortable to sit in a couch that is almost covered with throw pillows. Also, in order to make room, what happens is that these throw pillows are displaced every now and then. It is very tiring not to mention irritating.

c. Be consistent with the size of your room. If you think you have a small room to decorate then common sense will tell you that you should not be using very large furniture. If you are using large furniture to divide a large room into smaller rooms then it is okay. Otherwise, compliment the size of you furniture to the size of room you have.

d. Curtains blocking light. Using dark, heavy and big curtains to block off light is a good method. However, if you use these kinds of curtain in a small room, you should think twice. At night, when there is no more light to block, these dark curtains tend to make the room look much smaller.

e. Hanging wall accessories at eye-level. This is actually a sensible idea. However, the problem that this kind of positioning poses is the fact that these wall accessories could easily be reached by children, bumped by shoulders and hit by people’s heads. Also, when you place wall accessories higher than eye level, they give an illusion of height in the room making the room looks much lengthier.

f. Color mismatch. Colors play a very important role in making different impressions in your room. Thus, you should be careful in choosing the color for your house. Dark hues make a room much smaller so they should not be used if you have a small room. They are very ideal to fill up very spacious rooms, though.

To avoid facing much bigger problems in the future, make sure that you know how to stay away from these common mistakes. Always make sure that any plans you come up with do not include any of the six mistakes mentioned above.
