Answering the Critics

May 31st, 2008

Exerts from communications from Chet.

Chuck, if you’re eating any animal products at all, you’re not following the Genesis 1:29, the Hallelujah Diet, or the Sheltonian Natural Hygiene diet.

I think a good, clean, predominantly plant-based diet is great, but human beings also have to have some foods from the animal kingdom for long-term health.

I take it your version of the Hallelujah/Hygiene diet includes some animal foods like organic eggs? If that’s the case, good…. you’re teaching truth.

Although I know a lot of people who claim to be strictly following the Hallelujah Diet or Sheltonian Natural Hygiene diet, I also know that if they are pressed to tell the whole truth, they all admit to having “occasional” animal foods, which certainly makes sense since human beings are designed to eat clean foods from both plant and animal kingdoms. That’s why there’s never been a single culture on earth that was strictly vegan.

I’ve been researching this question since 1993, and in all those years I’ve never found any evidence of a 100% vegan society or culture in the whole history of human kind. That’s a simple matter of historical and sociological fact that can be verified.

Dr. Campbell has never documented a totally vegan society or even, near as I can tell, a 100% vegan group within the Chinese society, though he did study a number of groups who were so poor they had minimal animal foods for periods of time.

Regarding Dr. Campbell’s overall study, I’d suggest that you do more reading. He has not produced a study that is respected and cited by serious professionals in the nutritional field. My wife, a very serious researcher, has questioned Dr. Campbell’s research assistant about the proteins mentioned in his study, and the assistant was not helpful, at all. This caused us grave concerns as to the truth of what he was presenting and concluding.

Chuck, to deny that human beings are opportunistic omnivores who require foods from both plant and animal kingdoms is to deny reality. As far as I’m concerned, you can’t be a legitimate truth seeker if your mind is closed to evidence. And if you’re holding yourself up as an authority, then you owe it to the people who take your word as truth to tell them the whole truth.

My answer;

Dear Brother Chet

You seem to see only what you want to see and overlook anything that goes against what you chose to believe. There is no way that you can verify that there has never been a society that was totally vegan. Sorry.

Dr Campbell did document in his book that there were areas of China where no animal products were consumed. Also that there were areas where only very small amounts were used more as flavoring. As well as areas that eat a western style diet.

I have heard him speak and he confirmed this fact.

Of course his study is not respected by mainstream, so called scientists. They would have to admit that they were wrong. That would undermine their entire world view and every thing they teach. They would have to accept that they are the cause of countless pain, suffering and death. Human nature keeps them from doing this, just like it clouds your thinking.

Yes you are wasting your time if you are trying to convince me that everything I have learned about human physiology is wrong. Pigs are the only true omnivores. They produce many more enzymes for digestion of a wide variety of foods.

We humans don’t product Uri-case. This enzyme is necessary to digest the Uric acid in animal products. Without it we cannot deal with the high levels of Uric acid in these foods. Uric acid wrecks havoc on our bodies. We were designed for a 5% protein diet. Only a plant based diet gives us a 5% protein level.

While it has been demonstrated that few problems occur if we consume less that 4 oz of animal products per day, many people, me included have become allergic to animal protein and react quickly if we get very much in our diet. Even 4 oz/day several days in a row will cause arthritis type pain and other health challenges.

You say that “human beings are opportunistic omnivores” that is true as far as it goes. However to say that just because people eat meat to survive when there is little else to eat, does not therefore mean that their bodies require meat to survive.

Natural Hygiene teaches that we were designed for a 100% raw plant food diet. However it also teaches that if you are not able to resist animal products that you should stay under 4oz. per day and combine them properly to minimize their negative effects. That means that animal products should be eaten with a raw salad with no starchy foods. Is that the way you eat your meat?

To say that the entire system is a fraud or that the people who teach it are teaching heresy because they teach one thing and do another is wrong.

I am the only one in my family who eats the way I choose to eat. My wife now eats more fruit and vegetables than she once did, but will not give up her small amount of toxic fare. I do not judge her for it. I love her and try to set a good example. It is hard when so much toxic things are in front of me all the time.

My wife makes potato salad a few times a year with eggs in it. So Yes I eat the potato salad. When I go to a restaurant and have a salad I often have potato salad if it is available. I like potato salad but my body does not like it. If I have that much animal products in a week I only have minor evidence of the fact, that I deviated from the ideal. The fact that I had only minor evidence of an impact on my health does not make it OK.

If I have a little cheese on my salad the next day, and perhaps a veggie pizza the next and a little something else the next I soon have severe arthritis pain in the last place I was injured.

Personally I praise the Lord that my body chooses to send the toxins to my joints. Many people never know until it is too late that they have done much harm. I quickly feel it with sharp pain in my neck or my knees or some other joint.

No Chet, you will have no luck convincing me that I need the pain of arthritis. It just hurts too much.

Chet do you eat your meat raw? If not you cannot digest it. Cooking destroys the food enzymes that could help you digest flesh foods. We don’t have strong enough acid or any enzymes to digest meat. If you cook it all you have is deranged protein that is toxic to the body. Eggs are not any different.

True omnivores produce enzymes to aid in the digestion of the raw animal products they eat. If you give them or carnivorous animals a steady diet of cooked animal products, they soon get the same diseases we humans do. Cooking deranges the proteins and makes a toxic stew that overwhelms the bodies ability to eliminate those toxins. The result is that it has to either store them or increase, beyond normal, its efforts to eliminate the extra toxins. To deny this can only lead to disaster.

Do you get your milk products from sources that provide you raw milk products. Pasteurized milk has no value to any human over the age of 3 years. We are supposed to be weaned by then. We stop producing the enzymes we need to digest milk by then. If it is pasteurized the food enzymes in the milk cannot aid your digestion, so all you have is a high protein product that you have no use for, with a lot of empty calories loaded with toxic inorganic minerals, and added toxic chemicals.

If you judge the system as false because some of its leaders occasionally slip and eat something that they know they should not eat, and then assume that they are teaching falsehood because they don’t practice what they preach is the height of folly.

I will pray for you Chet.

I perceive that you are an angry man, that you feel that you have been wronged. I feel that you are lashing out in the only way you can, by accusing those who you are working so hard to put down, of teaching falsehood. I pray that one day you will see that you are doing harm to yourself and to those who listen to you.

Natural Hygiene stands on well established fact, Human physiology, and natural Law. The evidence is overwhelming. To deny this does not make you right.

By the way, Dr Donaldson confirmed that he based his statements that the diet was lacking in sufficient nutrients on the published RDA’s

It has been known for many years that the RDA’s are at least double what we really need. In their own literature the government states that they took what they guessed we needed and doubled it to give a margin of safety. When that is taken into account the vegan, Genesis 1:29 diet, has more than enough of every nutrient.

I Love you in Christ. May God Bless you Chet.

Your servant,

Chuck

Health Benefits of CoQ10 - A Powerful, Important Heart Compound

May 8th, 2008

Coenzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinone, but most widely referred to as CoQ10) is a substance that can be found in every cell of the body, where it is used to produce the large amounts of energy needed for healthy cell growth, repair after damage, and maintenance.

CoQ10 also functions as a powerful antioxidant, which protects the cells and the entire body from damage caused by harmful molecules.

Not only does it help keep the cells of the body healthy and in good condition, CoQ10 helps to keep the entire body functioning by helping to supply necessary energy to hard working organs. CoQ10 functions as a sort of catalyst, jump starting energy production within cells. The body then uses the generated energy for a host of vital processes, including smooth and striated muscle contraction and digestion.

Scientists have also discovered that CoQ10 is found in especially high concentrations in organs that require a lot of energy, such as the heart. Without CoQ10, energy production and therefore organ function would screech to a halt.

Researchers first discovered and named Coenzyme Q10 in 1957 while they were examining how the cell produces energy. Almost fifty years later, scientists are still finding new and better uses for the important substance, and have begun to discover evidence that treating patients with CoQ10 supplements may actually assist in the prevention and treatment of such devastating illnesses as heart disease and cancer.

CoQ10 can help prevent heart disease by first using its antioxidant power to prevent cholesterol from being attacked by free radicals in the body, freeing up precious reserves of vitamin E for other uses by the body. In this way, the coenzyme has also been found to work in conjunction with vitamin E to prevent the damage to arteries caused by cholesterol that leads to heart disease.

Also, because of its original purpose of generating energy for the heart, some researchers are beginning to believe that CoQ10 can be used as a drug to boost failing organs, especially the heart.

As important as CoQ10 is to the proper function of virtually every part of the body - skin, muscles, organs, etc. - you might be surprised to find out that some of the most popular prescription drugs for the reduction of cholesterol in the body are actually responsible for depleting the body’s reserves of CoQ10 on an alarming level.

Statin drugs, such as Lipitor, Zetia and Crestor, widely prescribed to assist patients with high cholesterol bring their levels back to a normal range, have been found in several studies to decrease the level of naturally produced CoQ10 and even deplete the amount held in reserve by the cells in case of emergencies.

Thankfully, a CoQ10 deficiency caused by statin drugs is completely preventable and ultimately reversible by supplementing the patient with CoQ10 from outside sources. Clinical trials have shown that supplementation of CoQ10 also seems to have no adverse impact on the cholesterol lowering or anti-inflammatory properties of the statin drugs.

So, if it is a naturally occurring compound in the body, you may be wondering how a person would go about supplementing it in their system. Aside from taking commercially prepared supplements, CoQ10 is naturally present in small amounts in a wide variety of foods that many people enjoy every day, such as beef, peanuts, mackerel and sardines. It is also found in high concentrations in organ meats such as heart, liver, and kidney, but many people prefer to take a pill or gelcap supplement rather than eat these items.

Just like with any other type of medication or supplement, different people respond differently to treatment and supplementation and the body’s response to additional CoQ10 in the system can take time. Don’t be surprised if you don’t see results right away, as it may take more than eight weeks to see some benefit from therapy. Most people take about 150 to 300 mg per day for supplementation of organ function, but only about 10-30 mg per day is required for anti-aging benefits.

Another option is a comprehensive supplement that helps the body naturally produce more CoQ10. This is perhaps the best way to ensure that your body has the CoQ10 it needs to function properly, as many individual Coenzyme Q10 supplements are subpar.

Take Your Vitamins, but Don’t Overdose on Them

April 17th, 2008

We all know people who go to the local health store like GNC or High Health to get their supply of vitamins. They often go to these places because they feel or even know that they can get a better grade of vitamin there than at the local drug store or supermarket.

While this is not a bad idea, a lot of the vitamins sold at the health stores come in much too high of a dose per pill or capsule. Sometimes it is just the person’s belief that more is better, but all too often they purchase these mega-dose vitamins at the beckoning of the sales person working there who recommended them.

Long ago the U.S. government set the guidelines as to the proper levels of vitamins and minerals people should take and not exceed to help prevent overdose. Many people think that these assessed levels are too low, and believe that it is better to take much higher doses than what is recommended. The question is, is this safe to do?

Of course it is a good idea to take a vitamin and mineral supplement, but as it always was, it is still recommended that you get more of your vitamins and minerals from whole food sources. It is not a good idea to think that a poor, improper diet can be made up for by simply taking a handful of vitamin and mineral pills. While it is true that it is hard to get all of the vitamins and minerals you need daily from food alone, vitamin and mineral pills are only meant to fill these little gaps, not totally replace them.

When the Food and Nutrition Board of the Academy of Sciences set the recommended daily allowances for each vitamin and mineral, it was done based on studies that determined how much of each vitamin and mineral our body needed and how much we could reasonably obtain from food. It was determined that taking extra vitamins and minerals within the recommended guidelines was safe.

It is important to take vitamins and minerals because aside from being needed for normal bodily functions, they are important in fighting disease and helping to cure many ailments. Some people believe that they can prevent cancer, stop aging, ease arthritis, and help with lots of other conditions with vitamins. Billions of dollars are being spent on vitamins and minerals to be taken in mega-doses with the belief that they can cure many of their ailments.

There are many people who think that the RDA’s should be increased because they believe that the current recommended doses are too low. Recently, the RDA’s of some vitamins and minerals has been increased, such as vitamin C. However, the Food and Drug Administration has not been too eager to increase the RDA’s of others because there are studies that indicate that taking more is not better. In fact, taking too much of some vitamins and minerals can cause both a toxin buildup as well as a mineral imbalance in the body.

Taking vitamin E at more than 1000mg for example increases the risk for possible bleeding. It had always been believed that taking mega-doses of vitamin C can cure a cold and even prevent cancer. The FDA however believes that too much vitamin C can cause diarrhea. There are also studies being conducted that are beginning to hint that if you take too big of doses of anti-oxidants while being treated for cancer, you may be feeding the cancer cells, making them resistant to chemotherapy.

The best approach to taking vitamin and mineral supplements is to stay within a moderate dose. This means that you do not need the “super huge mega size” multi-vitamin pills often sold in the health stores. There are plenty of multi-vitamins sold at these health stores that are within good, moderate, acceptable levels of vitamin and mineral content.

Remember this also, when the sales person working there attempts to sell you the outrageously big vitamin pills, they are doing so because those vitamins are usually more expensive and will bring in higher commissions. The vast majority of the people who work in these health stores do not have any degrees or certifications’s in any area of nutrition and so are NOT qualified to determine how much of any vitamin or mineral you need.

If you think you may need more of any vitamin or mineral, the best approach is to consult with your doctor. Your doctor can assess your blood work results and determine whether you need more or even less of any of the vitamins or minerals.

An Overview of the B5 Vitamin

April 6th, 2008

The B5 vitamin is also known as Pantothenic Acid. The B5 vitamin is the most prolific of all the vitamins and is found in every type of food. In fact, it is impossible for a person to consume less B5 vitamin than they need. That means that there is no little possibility that a person can have a B5 vitamin deficiency. For this reason, there is actually no recommended daily amount that health professionals can state as everyone obtains more than enough from their normal food consumption. However, even though there is no need to calculate a recommended daily allowance it does not mean that the B5 vitamin is not vital for a healthy body and mind. In fact, the B5 vitamin is essential for turning food into energy amongst other functions. The B5 vitamin is responsible for taking the fats and carbohydrates into energy.

Some B5 vitamin can be found in almost every food whether it is animal or vegetable. Obviously there are some sources of the B5 vitamin that are better than others but a balanced diet will provide more than enough. The foods with the highest B5 vitamin content are organ meats, salmon, eggs, beans, milk, and whole grains. It is worth noting that the B5 vitamin is lost when grains are milled into flour and tends not to beaded back in. Therefore, processed grain foods such as bread, pasta, rice, breakfast cereal, and baked goods are not good sources of the B5 vitamin.

The B5 vitamin is the most effective when it is combined with other B vitamins especially thiamin or B1, riboflavin or B2, niacin or B3, pyridoxine or B6, and biotin. Along with these other B vitamins, the B5 vitamin is an integral part in a number of processes. The most important of these is the production of energy from food that is consumed and this is known as the Kreb’s cycle. The B5 vitamin is also required for releasing energy from fats.

Interestingly, the B5 vitamin is also considered to be helpful in reducing stress. This is chiefly due to the fact that during periods of stress, the body produces more of certain hormones such as adrenalin and these require the B5 vitamin. There are many theories as to the benefits of the B5 vitamin but there is no need for the majority of people to actively seek out foods that are high in B5 as they are likely to be consuming far more than is needed already. There are no adverse effects to consuming too much B5 vitamin.
