Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Mt Everest and Mont Blanc in France

June 17th, 2008

Bahadur Sherchan last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. This season Anthony Loeff the French mountaineer is reporting the scales for Chomolungma after reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro earlier this year.

Sherchan just 17 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

Therefore, he was all too aware of the potential dangers Mt Everest could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused “the Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

Min Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Mount Everest. The Chinese were flying their airplanes over Chomolungma or Mount Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. More than 3219 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

Nepalese climber, 77, oldest climber to conquer the top of Mt Everest Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Andrew Brash returned a hero to Calgarians. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Min Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. Now that Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

“The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Chomolungma. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though Chomolungma or Mount Everest is shared by two countries. His first found him within 210 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. One year later, Andrew Brash, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Mount Everest to finish what he had started.

The 76-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of the Mount Everest. Nevertheless, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Andrew Brash with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

Choosing Where to Travel

May 30th, 2008

If you are planning to take a vacation, be sure to know what
you really like to do. This will make your trip more meaningful.

Mostly, travelers go on a trip recommended by friends, but is
this what they really want? It’s never too early to plan for
your trip and to do what your heart really desires. Hawaii Forum

Here are several questions to ask yourself before starting to
plan your vacation. Do I want to relax? Do I want adventure or a
learning experience? Do I want to get away from my job? Once you
know the answers to these questions, then you are ready to plan
your trip.

Vacations are needed for our emotional, physical and mental
balance. Vacations give a person a chance to relax, renew his
energy, and free him from his daily routine. Vacations can be
far away or close to home. Wherever the vacation may be, it does
the same thing. It provides satisfaction, which is far more
important than the destination itself.

Generally, there are some different types of travel according to
the activities involved. Here are some of them:

1. Responsible Travel. Traveling doesn’t always have to be
self-serving. With responsible travel, one could have enjoyment
as much as respecting the local environment and the people.

2. Rediscovering nature. Rediscovering travel is all about
nature and everything in it. It revitalizes the soul while
experiencing everything there is to know about nature.

3. Tribal cultures. In today’s world of high technology, it is
wise to experience the simpler life of the tribal people who
have lived close to nature in the same way for thousands of
years.

4. Responsible Diving. Diving not only lets travelers appreciate
what is in the sea but also helps make the traveler more aware
of efforts concerning conservation of our natural resources.

Plan your travel to a country that will leave a great mark in
your traveling diary. Here are some of the most popular
destinations today:

1. Thailand. Thailand is also known as Siam. It is an Asian
country bounded by Burma, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. Behind
the back draft of Thailand’s jungles of bamboo, rubber trees and
vines are the Five-star hotels of modern conveniences. In some
parts of the country, elephants are still being use to lift
timbers and buffalos are still being used in farming.

2. China. China is now the second largest country and fastest
growing economy in the world. Most parts of China are still
unexplored by tourists; however, the eastern portion is now
popular to western tourists. First class hotels now offer the
highest class of amenities and dozens more are still being built.

3. Italy. Italy is a boot-like shape country bounded by
Switzerland, Austria, France, and Slovenia. The main attraction
of Italy is St. Peter’s Square where the Pope resides.

4. Caribbean. Caribbean is an archipelago of islands, 2000
square miles across. Most of the islands are plateaus and
eruptions of underlying mountain systems. It has nice beaches of
crushed coral and white or pink sand and the water at the shore
is a deep blue.

The success of any vacation will not depend on how much money
the traveler spent or the destination. The final outcome will
depend on the degree of enjoyment experienced by the traveler.

Getting across the pond without a rowboat

May 2nd, 2008

Back in the days of I Love Lucy, when people would want to cross the Atlantic they’d have to carefully consider whether they should go on a ship or by plane. Now everyone is concerned with flights to Europe, and only a very few people go by boat. When looking for a cheap price on a seat to Europe the best place to start is flying into London and then booking a separate flight to your final destination. There are many discount airlines operating in Europe, and you can’t take them from the States, but you can take them cheaply once you land in one of the bigger cities there. But before you try this approach you have to realize there are potential downsides to it as well.

One tricky thing is often the flights into London land at Heathrow, and then the cheaper flights on to other European cities leave from Gatwick or Luton. You might be able to save a bit of money on this combination of flights, but you have to weigh that against the amount of time it takes to get from Heathrow to the other airport. Most flights across the Atlantic land in Europe in the morning, so it’s possible to get into Heathrow at 8am and then be on a flight out of Gatwick at noon, but what kind of a way is that to start out a fun vacation?

You can also try the same trick flying into Frankfurt, Paris, or Amsterdam, but it’s a bit harder to save money this way since the flights to those cities are usually higher than to London, and the flights to the next place will be the same price, more or less.

Travel Safety Tips: Things to Consider When Traveling

April 18th, 2008

However, along with all of these great places are the risks of getting into trouble, especially if the person is not yet familiar of the new surroundings and environment.

Here’s a list of some safety tips that one can use when on travel.

1. Do the homework.

Like any kind of decisions people have to make, it is always important to know the area they will be visiting so as to familiarize themselves with the laws, locations of best tourist spots, and the kind of people they have to deal with.

Going to a place without having the slightest idea what it is all about is just as bad as going to the wilderness with beasts lurking everywhere and there’s no gadget to protect them.

2. Never travel alone.

Of course, there are times when people just want to be alone and unwind so as to shed off all of the hustle and bustle of urban living.

However, with the imminent danger lurking everywhere, it is better to travel with someone than to risk their lives traveling alone.

After all, people will never know what will happen next as soon as they arrive at their destinations, especially when it is their first time on the area.

3. Planning.

When traveling, it is extremely important to plan ahead. This will give the traveler enough time to decide on which things need to be on top priority and which should be considered at a later time.

Besides, when a person has enough time to plan things ahead, he or she will be able to think on things that will protect them when they are on travel already.

4. Always be prepared for emergencies.

It does not necessarily mean that people must be pessimistic on the way they plan their travels. It’s just that they have to consider any possible emergencies and be prepared for it.

As they say, an ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure.

5. Be aware of hotel accommodations.

It is best to choose hotels that are equipped with the best innovative safety equipment. This is to ensure that travelers will be safe once they are alone in their room.

So, whether a person is traveling for the first time or for the nth time, it is still best to keep in mind safety traveling tips such as these one so that the experience will always be a gratifying one.

Argentina Travel - Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Iguaz Falls, Tierra del Fuego, and Patagonia

April 12th, 2008

Argentina is on the way back from the economic crisis of the last few years. If you are looking for a travel destination, Argentina is amazing and cheap.

Economic Woes

While Argentina has unlimited beauty, it also has unlimited corruption. The massive corruption finally lead to an economic crisis at the turn of the century. With the currency devalued and jobs hard to find, Argentina was a decidedly dangerous place for travelers. At one point, the country was going through Presidents faster than I go through coffee. At one point, the country went through five of them in a month! Wait, that might not be such a bad idea. Regardless, things appear to have stabilized and the country is back on the travel map. So, what’s to see?

Buenos Aires

Prior to landing in Buenos Aires, you are strongly encouraged to glue your jaw shut. Buenos Aires is a city of jaw-dropping beauty. In many ways, you will feel as though you have magically been transported to Vienna. The European impression is overwhelming. The city is elegance itself. If you’re a meat eater, make sure you experience one of the steak houses. You won’t be disappointed.

Mar del Plata

You’ve been doing sit ups, right? The Mar de Plata is the hot beach area. Literally. Damn hot, sometimes. If you wish to pursue a little melanoma research, this is the place. If you prefer to pass on the cancer research, you can hit the Mar de Plata Aquarium, play golf on five different courses. The area is also rife with discos. Try the ones on the “Noisy Avenue”, but don’t mention my name. There were…problems last time I was there.

Iguaz Falls

If you like waterfalls, this is the place for you. The Iquaza Falls are twice as wide and taller than Niagara Falls. The Falls actually consist of over 250 cascades that came into existence due to a volcanic eruption. If you can, try to visit the falls in the spring or fall as it is ungodly hot and humid in the summer.

Tierra del Fuego

Welcome to the end of the world. At least, that’s the hook for Tierra del Fuego. Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego, is the southernmost city in the world. From the city, you can take the “end of the world” train to see incredible snow covered mountain ranges in the Tierra del Fuego National Park. Words fail me, but the area is definitely worth visiting. Come on, you rode the elephants in Thailand, didn’t you?
Patagonia

No, we are not talking about the clothing line. Patagonia is located in a vast area below Buenos Aires and is famous for uncompromised beauty. Greater Patagonia is actually split between Chile and Argentina. The section in Argentina is filled with glaciers, national parks and so on. I can’t possibly describe it, so I’m not even going to try. Just know that you will not be disappointed.

Argentina

From glaciers to beaches, from elegant cities to friendly little towns, Argentina is a top travel destination. With the economy stabilizing, now is the time to go.

Finding Lodging at Lake Huron

April 6th, 2008

Lake Huron is one of more popular vacation destinations in the country. Finding lodging, of course, is the trick during busy season.

Finding Lodging at Lake Huron

Lake Huron is the third largest of the United States’ five Great Lakes. It is located between Michigan and the province of Ontario in Canada. One section of Lake Huron, Georgian Bay, is located entirely within Canada. The lake has over 3000 miles of shoreline, and there are tons of different Lake Huron hotels, motels and bed an breakfast places in which you can stay for your vacation.

You will want to decide upon your Lake Huron lodgings depending on which country you want to vacation in. If you are looking for a Canadian trip, you will want to stay at one of the many places in Huron County, in the western part of Ontario. There are many different types of places for spending the night located here, like the bed and breakfast the Little Inn of Bayfield, which is located in Bayfield, Ontario. This inn has a four diamond (by the Canadian Automobile Association) restaurant, a spa and different packages for their getaways.

Another beautiful Lake Huron hotel located in Ontario is Brentwood on the Beach, located in Zurich, Ontario. This luxury palace is right on the water with a private beachfront as well as other amenities. There are spas, pools, golf and a sumptuous breakfast to complete your stay. You also have your choice of staying in a cottage or a room. Packages and getaway weekends are also available.

Also located in the Canadian portion of Lake Huron is the world’s largest lake island, Manitoulin. This island has Canada’s last existing Indian reservation, as well as other scenic views and hiking trails. There are quite a few different places on Manitoulin to choose from, and there are both inns and bed and breakfasts.

You can also choose to stay in Michigan, where there are many quaint towns located along the beaches of Lake Huron. Some towns to look at here include Lake Huron, Saginaw and Bay City, Michigan.
